Types of Rubber Sheets and Their Applications
Sep 04, 2024

Rubber sheets are widely used in various industrial fields, each type offering unique physical and chemical properties tailored to specific applications and environments. Understanding the different types of commonly used rubber sheets and their characteristics can help in making informed decisions when selecting materials.

Firstly, Natural Rubber Sheets (NR) are among the most common rubber sheets. They are renowned for their excellent elasticity, wear resistance, and tear strength, making them ideal for high-stress conditions. Natural rubber sheets are widely used in applications requiring high elasticity and impact resistance, such as conveyor belts, seals, and vibration dampening pads. However, natural rubber is less resistant to oils and degrades more quickly in high-temperature environments, making it unsuitable for applications that require oil or heat resistance.

Nitrile Rubber Sheets (NBR) are well-known for their outstanding oil resistance, making them widely used in mechanical manufacturing and the automotive industry. Nitrile rubber can withstand the corrosive effects of fuel, lubricants, and animal and vegetable oils, and it also possesses good wear resistance and mechanical properties. This makes it an ideal material for manufacturing oil seals, gaskets, and hoses. However, nitrile rubber has poor weather resistance and is not suitable for long-term exposure to sunlight or extreme weather conditions.

Neoprene Rubber Sheets (CR) are a type of rubber sheet that boasts multiple excellent properties. Not only are they oil-resistant and wear-resistant, but they also have superior weather and ozone resistance, making them widely used in chemical equipment linings, cable jackets, and sealing materials. Neoprene rubber sheets can also resist the corrosion of various chemicals, making them highly favored in the chemical and electrical industries. However, their elasticity decreases in low-temperature environments, so caution should be exercised when using them in cold regions.

For equipment that operates in extreme temperature environments, Silicone Rubber Sheets (SIR) are widely used due to their exceptional temperature resistance. Silicone rubber sheets can maintain their elasticity and physical properties across a temperature range of -60°C to +250°C. Additionally, they have excellent electrical insulation properties and resistance to aging, making them indispensable for seals and gaskets in electronic and electrical equipment.

EPDM Rubber Sheets are known for their outstanding weather resistance, ozone resistance, and aging resistance. They are widely used in construction and chemical industries, especially in outdoor environments, where EPDM rubber sheets are favored for their ability to withstand sunlight and ozone exposure. Additionally, EPDM rubber has excellent acid and alkali resistance, making it an ideal material for chemical containers and pipeline linings.

For demanding industrial environments, Fluororubber Sheets (FKM) are the material of choice. Fluororubber sheets can operate at temperatures up to 300°C and resist a wide range of corrosive chemicals, including fuels, acids, and alkalis. As a result, fluororubber sheets are extensively used in aerospace, petrochemical, and high-end manufacturing, particularly in sealing and protection applications under extreme conditions.

Lastly, Recycled Rubber Sheets offer an economical and practical option. Made from reclaimed waste rubber products, they are inexpensive and have stable performance. Recycled rubber sheets are commonly used for flooring, anti-slip mats, and other applications where performance requirements are not stringent.

In summary, the various types of rubber sheets, with their unique physical and chemical properties, find widespread application across different industries. When selecting rubber sheets, it is crucial to consider the specific environment and requirements of the application, taking into account the performance characteristics of each material, to ensure safety and longevity of the products.
